Neon, Digital Billboards + the Future of Signage

By Center / Architecture + Design (other events)

Thursday, September 10 2015 6:00 PM 7:30 PM EDT

ABOUT ABOUT

This promises to be an important event for those concerned with Philadelphia’s urban landscape.  Four speakers will each make short presentations on signage as it relates to Center City history and development:

  • John Pringle, Senior Associate at Stantec and architect for Lit Brothers digital billboards
  • Patrick Grossi, Director of Advocacy at Preservation Alliance of Greater Philadelphia
  • Harris Steinberg, Director of Lindy Institute for Urban Innovation at Drexel
  • Len Davidson, President of Davidson Neon Design, Inc. and sign preservationist/historian

The floor will then be open to a free ranging discussion among presenters and audience about the impact of large-scale lighted signage on cities, neighborhoods, and residents.

LAST CHANCE!
Len Davidson’s vintage neon exhibition at the Center will be coming down later in 2015. Come check out these whimisical, classic signs one last time before they disapear from public view. Davidson is exploring new settings for these and 90 other pieces in his collection, but no one knows when or where they will once again be on public display. Lighted signage is of special interest to Philadelphia right now because of the developing East Market Street digital billboard district, approved by City Council in 2011.
